Our Light Bulb Moment: Cleaning Rates and Rate Sheets
We assumed every cleaner charged a flat fee, because we did. Building CleanSlate taught us otherwise. Here's what belongs in your rate, and how to set it once.

If you clean Airbnbs, you have probably seen the cleaning fee on a listing and wondered how it relates to what you get paid. The short answer: it is the host’s number, and your invoice is yours.
Airbnb describes the cleaning fee as a one-off charge set by the host. It is a flat fee per booking, not a nightly charge, and it counts toward the total price of the stay. Guests see it as a separate charge at checkout, unless the host has total pricing turned on.
A host can also set a lower fee for short stays of one or two nights.
The fee is part of what the guest pays for the stay, and the host decides the amount. Airbnb tells hosts to use it for cleaning supplies or a professional housekeeping service, not as a way to earn extra money. Airbnb’s pages do not describe paying a cleaner from it. What you earn comes from your agreement with the host.
The fee on the listing and your price are separate. A host might charge guests one amount and pay you another, and either can change without touching the other. Your invoice is the record of what you did and what you are owed: each clean by date, your rate, and each extra on its own line.
If you are setting your price, start with our rate guide. If a host asks what a clean should cost, your rate sheet is a better answer than a guess.
CleanSlate does not change the Airbnb cleaning fee, and it has no part in what guests pay. It is Airbnb cleaning software for your side of the work. Connect an iCal link for each listing, and every checkout becomes a line item at your rate. You review the invoice and send it to your host.
